Forecast

Light snow is expected to continue falling throughout Thursday evening, ending around midnight, according to meteorologist Sean Ryan with the National Weather Service.

Then, it's going to get even colder. The temperature Thursday evening is expected to drop to 21 degrees, Ryan said. By morning, metro roads could be an icy mess. And it's still going to be very cold.

"We're really going to struggle to make it to freezing Friday," Ryan said.

Most of the metro area shouldn't get more than a half-inch of accumulation, but areas further north could see 1 to 2 inches, Ryan said.

The good news: there's no more precipitation in the forecast over the next few days. Highs over the weekend are expected to be around 30 degrees. By Monday, we could even reach 50 degrees, Ryan said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has at the ready 2,300 employees, 700 pieces of equipment, 20,000 tons of rock salt and 20,000 tons of small gravel. Workers already have been dispatched to some areas in North Georgia, and crews officials will be paying special attention to bridges and elevated roads in metro Atlanta for the rush hour. The problems will most likely come during Friday's morning commute when anything left on the roads from Thursday night will have frozen. Road conditions will be put on the DOT web site.

The DOT has been dealing with ice patches on the interstate, according to spokesperson Erica Fatima. Crews have been dispatched to I-75 southbound at Windy Hill and to northbound and southbound lanes of Ga. 400 near Abernathy, Fatima said.

A small portion of I-285 in Clayton County also is icy, according to the DOT web site.

Thursday evening, several wrecks were reported all over Cherokee County, according to Lt. Jay Baker. No major injuries have been reported. County officials are urging residents to stay off the roads if possible.

Weather is the likely cause of multiple vehicle accidents across Paulding County, according to Cpl. Brandon Gurley with the Paulding County Sheriff's Department. Several roads are iced over, Gurley said at 9:15 p.m.

Several wrecks have also been reported in Cobb County, according to Officer Joe Hernandez.

Utilities

The weather shouldn’t present a problem for electric and natural gas customers. The Georgia Power Co. will be posting updates on its Twitter site.

Airlines

Delta Air Lines and AirTran Airways have canceled dozens of flights that were scheduled to leave Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after 5 p.m. Thursday. Delta canceled 76 of its flights and another 122 Delta Connection regional flights. AirTran canceled 51 flights nationwide.

At 9 p.m., delays were minimal at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, according to the FAA. Expect delays if you're planning to fly to cities experiencing winter storms, such as Chicago.
